Watching a formulaic chick flick is like being told that the entire movie industry thinks you're stupid, credulous and naive; that a pair of artfully dangled shoes or a cute, plump baby is enough to distract you from the fact that the storyline has been recycled a hundred times before; that at the first chime of wedding bells, we start salivating over table decorations and party favours. The chick flick, like its literary equivalent chick lit, has become a pejorative term. Which is why indications that the film world may finally be taking the female audience seriously are so welcome. Working Title's latest romantic comedy Definitely, Maybe - released next week - stands out from the crowd. It pushes all the right romantic buttons but is smart, well-observed and immensely satisfying.

Scenes of husband Jack staring in disbelief as undertakers carry off his beloved "Vee" are among the most heartbreaking in the show's history. Just hours before the bombshell, an excited Vera and Jack had been planning the final details of their move to Blackpool, where they were to start a new life. Details of how Vera dies have been kept under wraps. Three different endings were written and the final scenes were filmed in secret on a closed set last month. Only those involved in the scenes know which ending was chosen. Liz Dawn, who has played loudmouthed busybody Vera for 33 years, asked to leave her £200,000-a-year role because of ill-health.
House in hero-dad blaze lacked permits
A West Hempstead man who rescued his family from a raging house fire Friday now faces questions of why they were living in the home without the proper occupancy permits, town officials said.
Dr. Herman Weiss, 37, safely pulled his six children and his wife out of their home around 3 a.m. Friday, after he awoke to the blaring sound of a smoke detector and saw flames licking up the western exterior wall of their two-story house on Maple Street.
"This could have been a real tragedy," Weiss said Friday afternoon as he stood outside the burnt remnants of the home, which he built in 2006 to accomodate his growing family.
