Drugs, guns and secret passage: samba school in crisis

Less than a month before the start of the Rio carnival the city's best-known samba school has been thrown into crisis following scandals involving secret passageways, armed drug traffickers and one of Latin America's biggest drug kingpins.

Founded in 1928 by a now-legendary group of samba composers, Mangueira is one of the great symbols of Brazilian music. Each year the school attracts thousands of followers, including tourists and celebrities, to its annual carnival processions. This year, however, its preparations have been disrupted by a police investigation into its relationship with Brazilian drug traffickers, who control the neighbourhood where Mangueira is located.

This week The Tidings previews various upcoming archdiocesan celebrations happening early in 2008. More details on some of these gatherings will be presented close to their dates.

National Migration Week: Jan. 12-16
"From Many, One Family of God" is the theme of this year's National Migration Week which takes place Jan. 12-16 to honor the diversity and richness of God's family. "National Migration Week allows us to commit ourselves to work together in creating a climate of hospitality and a truly welcoming community to migrants so they can find a home and sit with us side by side around the Lord's table God has prepared for all of His family," wrote Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Solis, vicar for Ethnic Ministries, to parish pastors and leaders.

Parishes are encouraged to observe the week and were sent a resource kit from the U.S.


Tracz - Perrine

The bride is the daughter of Donald and Mary Short of Oneonta. The groom is the son of Stephen S. and Catherine A Tracz of Forest Hills.

Davenport Town Justice Britt T. Kelch performed the double-ring ceremony.

The bride went to Oneonta High School and is retired from AAA Tri County Motor Club. She started a new career working at Springbrook in Milford, and now works for ARC Otsego.

The groom attended Forest Hills High School. He retired as a sergeant from the New York Police Department and now works at ARC Otsego.

The couple plan a honeymoon in Florida. They plan to retire soon to live at their home in Middlefield and winter in Florida.
