Definitely, Maybe: the return of the thinking woman's chick flick

Watching a formulaic chick flick is like being told that the entire movie industry thinks you're stupid, credulous and naive; that a pair of artfully dangled shoes or a cute, plump baby is enough to distract you from the fact that the storyline has been recycled a hundred times before; that at the first chime of wedding bells, we start salivating over table decorations and party favours.

The chick flick, like its literary equivalent chick lit, has become a pejorative term. Which is why indications that the film world may finally be taking the female audience seriously are so welcome. Working Title's latest romantic comedy Definitely, Maybe - released next week - stands out from the crowd. It pushes all the right romantic buttons but is smart, well-observed and immensely satisfying.

Horticulture students create six themes for wedding show

The auditorium stage at Magna Vista High School was filled with splendid flowers of various colors, types and textures Friday for the horticulture department's Wedding Show.

The event began with more than 40 invited guests — including school system officials, teachers, parents of students and others — eating a lunch at themed tables. Each had elegant floral centerpieces, coordinated table linens and sometimes satin-draped chairbacks, table favors for guests and more.

Students conducted the program against a backdrop of Greek Ionic columns. The presentation included narration — with plenty of facts, history and other details — and students showing the audience the various floral decorations they created to carry out the tables' themes.

The idea behind the show was to enable students to share their designs and work together as a team.

Kirkland is pitching a hitching for V-Day

Volunteers hope to make Kirkland the wedding capital of the Northwest on Valentine's Day. So far they've booked four weddings but have room for more.

The group, Kirkland Weddings (kirklandweddings.com), started during the city's centennial celebration in 2005. The ambitious goal then was to do 100 marriages or renewals of vows. Fifty-six couples participated.

It was so much fun the consortium of local businesses and parks department folks decided last year to keep up the marrying. Retired Judge Carolyn Hayek officiates the ceremonies. A couple of photographers, a florist and a wedding consultant complete the package. Stacy Kvam, a wedding planner, assigns tasks and keeps everything on track.

The weddings are held at Heritage Hall. The package deal costs $350 and includes the site, a bouquet and boutonniere, a photographer and harpist Anna Jenkins of Kirkland.

American Idol Buzz

Such as your engagement and breakup? [She got engaged to her high school sweetheart Don Campbell last year but broke it off before they got married]

K: Big time. But it's not a dark album. There are some upbeat elements. It's very straight ahead and to the point. There's no guessing what the songs are about. It's very literal.

At this point in our career, are you trying to distance yourself from “American Idol"?

K: I'm trying ot have a career. I don't parallel myself with American Idol too much. I have to keep my career going. It's been three years since the show. I'm just trying to focus on what I have to do, where I am and keep going.

Does Idol still carry a stigma?

K: I think there is a stigma, which makes it even more difficult for us to kind of keep going.
