| For Museum of Art, Diana exhibit a crowning moment
For the second time in a year, the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale is the host of an exhibition of international renown. Today the museum's doors open to "Diana: A Celebration," a visual journey through the life of the late Princess Diana, containing 150 artifacts from all stages of her life. It is the premiere presentation of the exhibition in the United States. The potential blockbuster, scheduled to run through Dec. 31, comes a year after the immensely popular "St. Peter and the Vatican: The Legacy of the Popes," which drew 150,000 people to the museum in downtown Fort Lauderdale, a record for an art exhibition in South Florida. "I think it will certainly do as well," museum director Irvin M. Lippman says of the "Diana" exhibition. "We're not really projecting, but we know there's a huge interest." .
Real meat 'n' potatoes
And that's been the case at the 94-seat spot in a kitschy little building in Dearborn where Roland Richter Sr. opened Richter's Chalet back in November 1970 and started baking Black Forest tortes. Nov. 1, to be exact. It was his birthday, and the veteran chef had worked for years for hotel chains until deciding to open his own place. .
A Review of 2006: DiS is what it's all about, yo
Other news saw the sixth ultra-glossy edition of the marvellous Loose Lips Sink Ships magazine hit newsstands across the country and Regina Spektor's wonderful new album hitting delicate eardrums just as delicately. Broken Social Scene's self-titled album also received an official UK release through City Slang, and Cat Power returned with The Greatest, even if DiS didn't think it was. Her greatest album, that is. Oh, and some Sheffield band or other released their debut album. I'd like to suggest that February was a quiet month but this was when DiS editor Colin Roberts' (other) favourite new band volcano! released their debut album. Needless to say it got a hallowed 10/10 rating and Colin went and hung out with them when they played London's Luminaire. The Kilburn venue was voted London's best venue in February.
Nigel Reo-Coker top of the flops to prove money isn’t everything
Once this work is done it is possible to rank all the newly transferred players in terms of the points they have added (or subtracted) compared with the average player. Actually, not quite all. Quite a few transferred players haven’t been on the pitch enough to rank. Lassana Diarra, the midfield player, went from Chelsea to Arsenal and on to Portsmouth without being on the pitch long enough for us to assess his contribution to Arsène Wenger’s side. Now you have a choice. Do you want to look at how good these players were per minute on the pitch, or do you want to take account of how many minutes they played? Let’s look at their contribution per minute first, shall we? You might consider this a measure of potential, and therefore of longer-term interest.
Ill. Rep. Roskam may face 2nd female vet
We female vets are a tough bunch and we stand up for what we believe in," said Duckworth, now director of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs and a major in the Illinois Army National Guard. Morgenthaler is running in the Feb. 5 primary in the 6th Congressional District in Chicago's northwest suburbs against Stan Jagla, a 45-year-old Roselle businessman who says he's currently between jobs. Roskam has no Republican primary opponent, and a spokesman said the congressman wouldn't comment until his Democratic challenger was determined. Roskam spent millions to defeat Duckworth in their hard-fought race, and the National Republican Congressional Committee ran television ads portraying Duckworth as liberal on immigration issues. The race also drew attention because of Duckworth's personal story -- she was a pilot who was gravely wounded when her Black Hawk helicopter was shot down in Iraq.
